The Historical Difference One Tavern Can Make

Minnesotan Kris Schiffler of Shady’s, Inc. still plans to open his Albany tavern location Monday May 18 at noon in defiance of Gov. Walz’s stay-at-home order and despite a phone call from MN Attorney General Keith Ellison with threat of a $25,000/day fine per occurrence or location with no maximum cap.

Schiffler’s allies rallied over $166,000 via GoFundMe for legal and court costs. The goal is to allow all small businesses in MN to open with a determination to reach the MN Supreme Court if necessary. Vowing any funds leftover will be used for other small businesses and entrepreneurial aid, this six location food and entertainment corporation owner is preparing for a legal battle ahead.

Schiffler’s emotional social media content stated time is of the essence as small business owners and restaurants have been suffering for over eight weeks; he points out some seasonal businesses have only 105 days to make their annual income. Walz’s SAH order will rob them of a significant holiday weekend revenue opportunity they normally depend upon.

What’s the significance of a single tavern standing in solidarity with disgruntled citizens against an unrepresentative government?

Please consider the Green Dragon Tavern of Boston, Massachusetts.

The meeting spot for the Revolutionary likes of John Hancock and Samuel Adams.

It was the birthplace of the first American caucus.

It was the origin of Paul Revere’s midnight ride.

It was where the Boston Tea Party was planned.

A century later, a commemorative plaque would read:

“On this spot stood
THE GREEN DRAGON TAVERN
The secret meet place of the
Sons of Liberty,
And in the words of Webster, the
Headquarters of the Revolution.
To mark a site forever as
Memorable as the birthplace of American freedom,
this tablet is placed by the
Massachusetts Society of the Sons of Revolution.”

The tavern-goers are coming.
The tavern-goers are coming!
